Water Sports
These centres are well equipped with masks and snorkels and boards of varying sizes, whether you want to spend the day snorkeling and meeting glances with wide-eyed fish, or feeling the wind in your hair on a windsurfer or catamaran. Some centres offer courses for beginners and advances windsurfers and sailors. You could also chose to parasailing, kayak, kite-surf, water-ski, and jet-ski.
SURFING
Maldives is a mecca to surf-enthusiasts from all over the world, with the southwest monsoon bringing with it massive swells, especially from June to September. The sizes range from 3 – 8 feet. There are several well-known surf breaks in North and South Male’ Atoll. Resorts near these breaks are perfect for surfing aficionados, as you can get the full Maldivian experience while riding the waves to your hearts content. The
lesser-known, but amazing surf breaks further away from Male’ atoll can be accessed by specialized surf cruises (often referred to as surfaries) offered by cruise operators in the country.
WINDSURFING
The breeze and the wind movement and the large lagoons that surround most of the islands are ideal for windsurfing. A majority of resorts have windsurfing schools where you could take instructions and lessons and even be certified. Like the diving schools the surfing schools are well-equipped. Most of the time the condition is suitable for beginners.
SNORKELING
Even if you cannot dive or if you do not particularly want to try learning it, you could still enjoy the breathtaking underwater life by simply donning a mask and fins, and wading your way along the surface of the waters. One thing which every visitor marvels about is the distance / depth you could see into while you snorkel in the Maldives. The superb visibility of the sea contributed by the clearest waters on the Earth, would let you witness the busy colourful natural world beneath you as you snorkel. All resort islands offer a beautiful house-reef that you could snorkel everyday. Those resorts with far out reefs will have a boat that will take you to the reef. Mask and fins can be rented from the diving schools if you need them.
WATER SKIING
Many resorts have their own speed boats and skis for rent on per hour basis. Some even have instructors available to give you lessons. Prices vary form resort to resort.
PARA-SAILING
Equipment and service (boat and sail, and guide) for this adventurous pastime is offered by the more luxurious resorts. This would be ideal for those adventurous enough to go through the challenge. It will give you a fantastic Arial view of your resort and the surroundings.
CATAMARAN SAILING
This is a very relaxing and refreshing sports enjoyed by the visitors. It is always possible to embark on a new adventure sailing on the beautiful blue waters of the Maldives. Endless stretches of deep blue Indian Ocean waters awaits you, and the lush green islands dotting the horizon in thousands would tempt you to continue sailing forever.
BIG GAME FISHING
The resorts offer you the chance to experience night fishing using the traditional local style fishing line with weights. Some resorts have arrangements for Big Game Fishing on fast boats. It is advisable to bring your rod and lures for this type of fishing. Fishing in the Maldivian waters can be an adventure of a lifetime for keen fishermen and first-timers alike. The Maldivian seas are azure blue and deep, the fish numerous and varied. Sailfish, huge tuna, wahoo, barracuda and jackfish are common games.
