Yurts and kui performance on dombra included in the UNESCO List
Traditional knowledge in yurt making and the art of performing traditional Kazakh dombra kui are included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, reports BNews.kz. The decision was made in Paris on the 9th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Yurt is a nomadic dwelling that is a part of Kazakh and Kyrgyz people lifestyle. It has a wooden circular frame covered with felt and braided with ropes, and can be easily assembled and dismantled.
Kazakh Kuy is a solo composition performed on a traditional pear-shaped, long-necked, two-stringed, plucked musical instrument. Kuy is performed on family gatherings or social events, and as a rule is accompanied by narrated stories and legends. The art of Dombra Kuy plays an important role in strengthening the social unity of Kazakh people and develops the feeling of identity and unity.
In 2015 UNESCO will review the possibility of including in the list the national horse games “Kokpar” (or “Kok-Boru” as they call it in Kyrgyzstan).
