Green Destinations Pilot Project
Ecotourism Kenya (EK) with support from African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is implementing a pilot project to recognize and promote Green Destinations in Kenya. The project is aimed at raising awareness amongst stakeholders; get their input on the proposed green destination guidelines for Kenya. The proposed Green destination guidelines will be administered by Ecotourism Kenya. The long-term goal is to develop standards that will support these guidelines ending up in a certification scheme. However, during the pilot phase, the guidelines will be used for recognition of destinations and a certificate awarded to those complying with a significant percentage of the indicators.
Ecotourism Kenya has constituted a multi-stakeholders Project Implementation Committee (PIC) to oversee the project. Key stakeholders sensitization has been conducted on the draft Green Destination Guidelines and review input made. Currently, EK has sent out a call for Expression of Interest (EOI) to eligible destinations willing to participate in the piloting exercise. The pilot phase hopes to benefit from the experiences of participating destinations in order to sharpen the key considerations, actions, and indicators. The project is aware of the diversity of destinations and emerging issues and will as such, keenly look out for learning points from participating destinations.
