Historical City Center and Albaicin Neighborhood
Description
The Conquest of Granada was on January 2, 1492. It marked a “before and after” in the history of Granada. This date makes us travel across time and shows us the transformation of Granada: from the last bastion of Islam in Spain, to Christianity.
The ancient Medina; nowadays City Center is the heart of the city. It contrasts the Muslims past with the Christians present.
The neighborhood of the Albaícin was declared a Heritage of the Humanity in 1994. Today, the neighborhood preserves the original urban original shape and medieval construction, harmoniously fused with the traditional Mediterranean architecture. There are remains of the medieval wall and the different accesses or gates.
Come and walk with me around the three districts: religious, political and commercial. Discover that both districts are full of captivating, twisted and narrow streets, the typical Granada’s houses called in Spanish “cármenes”, minarets, alhondiga, market, hammam, river, etc.
