Must to see in Valle d’Itria: Alberobello and Locorotondo
Description
A tour to discover Alberobello and Locorotondo: 2 “jewels” of Itria Valley.
The historic city center of Alberobello is an Unesco World Heritage site because of its trulli (there are about 1.500): a unique kind of building with stone conical roof without any mortar that have survived quite intact and functioning into the modern world. Lots of them are still used as home and the others as restaurant, shop, tourist accommodation.
A tour to discover the trulli (their history, architecture, the mystery and symbolism of their pinnacles).
During the tour you will visit the two old districts of Trulli: Aia Piccola and Monti. If you like we can visit also the Trullo Sovrano (national monument) to understand how was life and furniture in the past in a typical trullo.
We will admire the skyline of Locorotondo (its name comes from the circular lay out of its city center) and we will visit this picturesque hamlet famous for its wine and its whitewashed houses with “pignon” stone roof . It has been awarded with the Orange Flag (a recognition for the quality of tourism and the environment in small inland towns) by the Italian Touring Club.
Some idea for changes to the itinerary
It’s also possible to extend / modify the tour with a meal in a typical restaurant; a culinary activity such as a cooking class or a visit to a workshop (winery, olive oil mill, bakery, etc.) with tasting (wine, extra virgin olive oil, cheese, some Slow Food Presidia such as Biscotto di Ceglie almond biscuit, Capocollo di Martina pork cured meat) or a visit to Martina Franca (with its Baroque city center), Ostuni (the white city up on the hill overlooking the seaside), the quaint hamlet of Cisternino, Castellana Grotte with its astonishing natural caves, Ceglie Messapica (the temple of Apulian cuisine), Noci and its «gnostre», Gioia del Colle and its Primitivo wine, Matera (Unesco site for its Sassi).
