Description
An 8-DAY TOUR INTO THE SOUTHERN REGIONS – the Jerid, Oases, Sahara, Ksour Region and the Isle of Djerba. Beginning (and ending) from Tunis, we will visit :

• KAIROUAN: visit the Great Mosque, North Africa’s oldest and most important mosque, “The Mosque of the Barber”, the 9th century Aghlabid basins and a walk through the medina.
• TOZEUR: walking tour of the medieval quarter. visit the Oasis & Museum Of The Palmerie
• The MOUNTAIN OASES of Chebika, Mides & Tamerza.
• Chott el Jerid
• The SAHARA Desert (overnight), Douz, and KSAR GHILANE, with an Optional sunset trek (by camel or dune buggy) over the dunes to the Roman fort.
• MATMATA: visit traditional troglodyte dwellings
• Panoramic drive to the mountain village Toujane with its 2 looming fortresses flanking the road
• KSAR REGION: This mountainous area is dotted with medieval ksour – monumental fortified granaries. We will stop at some of the best and most remote examples including Ksar Ouled Soltane.
• DOUIRET: the fascinating ancient Berber hilltop village, which rises 700m above the plains. Our B&B was originally an ancient dwelling on the outcrop, with rooms cut into the rock. The view from the terrace is spectacular extend all the way to the Mediterranean.
• Continue via the ROUTE OF THE KSOUR – we will stop at some fine examples, including KSAR HALLOUF.
• DJERBA: 2 nights on the legendary Isle of Djerba, Homer’s “Land of the Lotus Eaters”. Visit:
o The village of Er Riadh & El Ghriba Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in North Africa
o The main town of HOUMT SOUK, with visit to the souks, daily fish auction, the fishing port with stacks of traditional octopus pots & the Borj el Kebir, the main fortress of the island.
o Musée du Patrimoine de Djerba in Houmt Souk, dedicated to the unique culture of the Djerbians.
• MARETH: visit the Military Museum and the Mareth line. Learn about the history of “Operation Torch” & the Battle for Tunisia during WWII.
• SFAX: said to have the finest “living and working” medina within its 9th century ramparts
• EL DJEM: visit the magnificent Roman amphitheater, mosaic museum & Roman villas including “The House of Africa”
• Drive along the stretches of the AQUEDUCT of Carthage to Roman Uthina (Oudna).
• UTHINA: Off-the-beaten-track – this beautiful site offers sweeping views of the countryside & local shepherds grazing their sheep amidst the ruins. We explore the Capitolium Temple, forum, baths and well-preserved amphitheater.
